Both my hammers are hand made, the first one I made with my father teaching  me how you make a driving  hammer. The second I made on my own in the second year of my apprenticeship.  It was incorporated in to your 2nd year of your apprenticeship back then , along with making tongs & other hammers, as well as your farrier & forging tools, including the making of all the handles required for those tools.

What type hammer and weight is used the most, like for driving nails?  Never realized how expensive they were, and there seems to be some good deals on Ebay, looks like for used hammers.

depends on the work your doing and preference

if your working on T/B all day you might go light

but I would say 12oz is the most used over here
